Ethnic Enable



Improving the quality of life for disabled people and their carers from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds in Glasgow

AIMS:
To improve the quality of life for minority ethnic (ME) people with disabilities and their carers living in Greater Glasgow.

SERVICES PROVIDED:
- Offer general advice and information to ME disabled people and their carers on the services available to them
- Outreach worker assesses and identifies the needs of BME disabled people and their carers and supports them to access relevant services
- Provide training to bilingual volunteers who have an understanding of the cultural and religious issues of BME disabled people
- Transcription service allows individuals who are blind / visually impaired and deaf / hard of hearing access to books and other literature
- Teach local teachers to teach and support other groups to deliver training to other students in Arabic Braille
- Liaise with local BME organisations to make cultural and religious events accessible for BME disabled people
- Cultural Education Course for children and young adults with learning and physical disabilities
- Provide a mentoring service where an experienced role model offers support, assistance, advocacy or guidance
- Develop employability among those furthest from the job market by growing skills and confidence
- Networking with mainstream voluntary sector organisations
- Take BME disabled children and young adults to social, recreational or educational activities on a regular basis.

Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living



A user-controlled organisation committed to promoting inclusive living

AIMS:
To provide a range of services and resources to disabled people in the local area.

SERVICES PROVIDED:
- Advice on the Independent Living Scheme and Direct Payments
- Training courses on disability equality and disability discrimination
- Glasgow Disabled Persons Housing Service, including employment project
- Accessible training and conference facilities for hire
- Access audit service
- Nominated support organisation for people in Glasgow using Direct Payments.

SDSS (Self-Directed Support Scotland) and SPEAN have been funded by the Scottish Government to give free training to advocacy organisations about direct payments. SDSS is based at the Glasgow Centre for Inclusive Living.

OPENING HOURS:
Office opening hours are 10.00am - 4.00pm. If someone uses the Emergency Back-up Service then they should continue to use the mobile number outside these hours.

Conference facilities are still available for hire between 9.30am - 4.30pm.

Wellbeing Initiative



SVQ Administration training for people with a physical disability and also runs a Health & Disability Information Service

SERVICES PROVIDED:
The Wellbeing Initiative specialises in providing vocational training intended to meet the needs of unemployed adults who have a physical disability / health condition which they feel disadvantages them in the workplace. The course is designed to equip each candidate with the particular skills and qualifications needed to access employment in a clerical / administrative role within the open labour market.
The organisation is an approved Scottish Qualifications Authority Centre and provides training in Administration SVQ Levels 1 and 2.

The course content includes Information Technology training including - Internet access, email, word processing and database. It also includes all aspects of office skills including reception, mail handling, stock control, filing, health and safety and how to operate and care for all office equipment.

The training combines project based tuition, practical experience through working on their own Health and Disability Information Service and work experience with an employer.

The Health and Disability Information Service provides information on:-
- Local support groups
- Self help groups
- General and medical conditions
- Disability equipment
- Holidays and leisure activities
- Education.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
A training allowance may be available depending upon individual circumstances and benefits.
Funding for childcare is available for those who have young children.
Health and Disability Information Service covers the whole of Scotland, while the training project only covers Glasgow.
