Working together to protect 'adults at risk'

Monday 22 March 2010, King James Thistle Hotel, Edinburgh

Keynote speaker: Hilary Patrick, Co-author 'Adult protection and the Law in Scotland'.

Featured speakers include: Sandra McDonald, Office of the Public Guardian; Marcia Ramsay, Director of Adult Services Regulation, Care Commission; Val de Souza, Association of Directors of Social Work; George Kappler, Deputy Director, Mental Welfare Commission;

Protecting ‘adults at risk' is a key objective of central and local government. There are several acts which offer various safeguards - the 2007 Adult Support & Protection Act, the 2000 Adults with Incapacity Act, the 2003 Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act and the most recent 2007 Protection of Vulnerable Groups Act - such that it can sometimes be hard to decide which is the most appropriate or useful piece of legislation to enact in a given situation.

Practice is starting to suggest that it is important, in many cases to consider a whole range of interventions from these Acts in order to effectively support and protect some of the most vulnerable individuals in our communities.

This conference aims to look at the support offered by a breadth of legislation, to consider how organisations are working together under the various acts to protect ‘adults at risk' and, via use of actual case examples, consider how and when to use which act in particular cases.

The conference will

  • Hear from speaker's expert in each of the legislative areas
  • Discuss how all the various acts combine to protect ‘adults at risk'
  • Examine through workshop sessions the need for professionals to work together
  • Consider the impact of Adult Protection Committees
  • Debate the future challenges for supporting and protecting adults at risk in Scotland
