The Scottish Government has announced "record funding" for NHS boards in Scotland of £8.6 billion for the next financial year, Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon has said. This amount includes £385 million for buildings and infrastructure projects, which the Government says will "help boost sectors of the economy hit hardest by the recession", and includes investment in buildings, IT and medical equipment.
Between 2008 and 2011 the total NHS Scotland infrastructure budget is £1.7 billion, a 20 per cent increase on the previous three financial years. Projects benefiting from the settlement include the £27.8 million neonatal unit at Glasgow's Southern General, which will receive £12 million in the next financial year.
"This record funding for NHS boards across Scotland underlines this Government's unshakeable commitment to our publicly-owned health service," said Sturgeon.
"It means health boards will have the resources they need to progress their plans and offer a first class service to patients across Scotland.
