UCanDoIT is a charity that teaches people with disabilities how to use computers on a one-to-one basis in their own homes.
UCanDoIT started in 1998 in the belief that the internet can change the lives of disabled people, bringing them a greater level of independence and combating social exclusion. Since then we have taught almost 3,500 people with over 80 different disabilities from all backgrounds and all age groups.
Last year, they received funding from The Big Lottery to extend their services in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth.
They have also secured funding to provide quality, reconditioned computers to those who don’t have one and any necessary hardware and software (e.g. Dragon Naturally Speaking, Zoomtext, Guide, JAWS). Many of the tutors have a background in teaching assistive technology and have worked with people with all levels of computer ability.
They have found that students learn much more when taught individually, on their own computers, than is a class situation and people have the confidence to say if they need some item reviewed. Learning how to access IT and the Internet is becoming a necessary part of modern life and they are dedicated to helping people with disabilities gain equality in this area.
UCanDoIT have recently secured funding to work with people with learning disabilities – a welcome development!
